Dry and sunny start to 2015 Sales of ice creams, bottled water, sunscreen and water slides have been “going crazy” as temperatures around the Nelson region hit near-record highs last month. The latest Met Service records released on Monday tell us what we already know – that January in Nelson was one of the hottest and driest months on record. Nelson’s average mean temperature last month was 19.1 degrees Celsius, with the
highest maximum of 27 degrees being recorded on January 18 and 29. That made it the fifth warmest January since records began in 1941 and the second driest with just 6.6mm of rain in the month. In fact, if it hadn’t have rained on Saturday – the final day of the month – it would have been the driest January on record, beating the record low of 3.7mm in 1978.

Berryland’s ice cream truck in Bethany Park in Kaiteriteri was also busy making around 200 a day. “We have four girls in the shop and they have been working really hard. We also sell berries but it’s the ice creams that people have been after.” Ice cream producers have also been flat out, with Talley’s domestic retail sales manager Bob Darragh saying their ice cream has been “flying out
the door” to retailers. Sunscreen has also been a hot item with Andrew McGlashen of McGlashen Pharmacy estimating sales are up around 20 per cent on last summer. “Sunscreen has really been selling but what’s really interesting is that we have sold less products for treating sunburn.” Although supermarket owners would not reveal figures, they all reported a big increase in sales of ice cream, water, drinks and sunscreen. Fresh Choice Richmond’s Gary Watson says kids with ice creams have been a common sight in shopping trolleys outside his Richmond Mall supermarket.

The rain may have been an unwelcome guest at this year’s Sarau Festival but it didn’t manage to dampen the spirits of those who attended. “I think it’s disappointing because it doesn’t make it as much fun for people, but it’s fabulous that people turned out and hopefully they all had a really good time,” says festival co-ordinator Jenny Leith. The Sarau Festival is in its eighth year and has gained a reputation for providing a laid back and enjoyable time for all. This year was no different and, as well as celebrating the Moutere’s blackcurrant harvest, the festival also featured a display of crosses and a history tent to commemorate the men from the district who fought in World War 1. There were over 100 stalls on the day, including arts, crafts and food from around the

Stolen family car torched A Richmond couple spent Tuesday morning “racing around trying to borrow a car and find new car seats” so they could take their three children to school and pre-school and then get to work after their family car was stolen and torched. Peter Cook says they had their Mazda station wagon stolen from their Richmond home sometime on Monday night, leaving the young family with three children under-seven carless. And they are going to stay that way, for a few days at least, after the car was found burned out behind the Stoke Hall. “The first I knew about it was when the police knocked on our door at six this (Monday) morning,” Peter says. “It was parked in the driveway and locked so it’s a bit of a shock the kids were crying, the missus was crying - it’s not good. “It’s the only car we have got it’s the only one we can afford so it’s really inconvenient. I’d just put two new tyres on it and filled it up with petrol too. “I can’t understand why anyone would want to do this. It’s not

Fortunately the car was insured so Peter is hoping to get a replacement sooner rather than later. News of the theft made its way to Facebook where locals weren’t shy in sharing their thoughts on the theft. One called them “bloody low lifes”, while Stacey Schoester
wrote, “That is bloody disgusting, that makes me so angry! Hope they find the person/ people that did that.” Nelson Police says the theft was reported to them by the firebrigade which extinguished the car fire. Fire incident records show that the Stoke Volunteer Fire Brigade attended the fire at about 5.10am. Nelson cyclist Tom Filmer is certain to have some painful memories of his 21st birthday after deciding to celebrate the occasion by riding up the Barnicoat Walkway 21 times in 21 hours. Riding up the track just once is enough for most recreational mountainbikers, who usually take around 30 or 40 minutes to climb the 451 vertical metres and 3 kilometres from the head of the Marsden Valley to the top of the Barnicoat Range. But Tom wanted to “do something different” for his 21st and came up with the crazy plan for riding the Barnicoat 21 times in 21 hours. He also wanted to be celebrate his birthday by helping a charity and is promoting his 21 ascents ride as a fundraiser for the Nelson Tasman Hospice. “Lots of people have helped me out with my riding over the years so I thought it was time for me to give something back,” Tom says.

“All the charities do a really good job but we decided on the hospice because all the nurses and people behind it are so awesome.” Tom will start his charity ride with head lights at 4am this Saturday. He will need to ride around 126 kilometres of the fourwheel-drive track and climb a total of 9471 vertical metres in 21 hours to reach his target - that’s 623 metres more than Mt Everest. “The fastest I’ve gone up there is around 16 or 17 minutes and I’ve ridden it really hard five times in a row in training but this is going to completely different. It will be really important to pace myself and keep a close eye on my heart rate so I don’t blow up. “I’ll also need to make sure I keep eating and drinking. If I don’t keep my energy levels up

I’ll go downhill really quick.” Tom says he has been training hard for the challenge, completing an eight hour, 150 kilometre ride from Nelson to Takaka and back via the Rameka Track and Kaiteriteri Mountainbike Park late last month. He had also been training for the New Zealand Cup cross-country race in Wellington and has “rolled over his training” from that event. Tom says he is keen for riders to join him “on as many of the ascents as they like” and is encouraging them to make “a donation per ascent” to the hospice. Volunteers will be collecting donations for the hospice on the day of the ride but donations can be made online to HospiceCharityRide account number - 12-3040-0572664-51 Reference TOM. Simon Bloomberg Richmond shoppers were looking skyward last Wednesday as they watched Coman Construction crane a giant roof onto Network Tasman’s new two-storey office building on Queen St. The 13.5 metre long and 14.5 metre wide timber framing for the roof was constructed using Laminated Veneer Lumber, produced just down the road at Nelson Pine Industries. It was designed by another Lower Queen St company, Potius Panels, which uses engineered timber panel systems as a lightweight and fast alternative to conventional flooring and roof structures. The roof weighed 9.7 tonnes, including the crane’s rigging, and will later by covered by purlins and plywood and long-run roofing. “It was an intricate lift,” Coman Construction’s site manager Gavin Williams says. “There was quite a lot of time spent setting up the crane for the lift and then it took us about two hours to get it in place and secured.” Coman Construction’s construction manager, Ben Coman, says the new office building is replacing the 1930s Power Board building that was demolished in 2013 because it was a seismic risk. The project is being managed by Don Robertson of Tasman Projects and has been designed by Redbox Architects with engineers Cameron Gibson Wells, using the latest seismic technology. Network Tasman has leased the new building from the middle of this year to Nelson Marlborough District Health Board and Nelson Bays Primary Health. They also lease the first and second floors of the adjacent three-level building, and will have capacity for over 100 staff and 10 consulting rooms in the offices.

Wakefield Methodist Church held its final service as a worshipping congregation on Sunday, January 11. The service also marked the last led by Minister Paul Tregurtha, who is retiring after eight years as Waimea Methodist Parish Presbyter. Martin Oh, originally from South Korea, has been appointed as his replacement and will be inducted into the church on February 4. The disestablishment of the Wakefield congregation brings to an end a long history of Methodist witness in the area that began in 1872 in a church located in Wai-iti. In 1911, land was purchased for 60 pounds as a site for a new church and in 1916 a decision was made to start building a new church for under 300 pounds. The Wakefield Methodist Church was completed and opened in 1919 with 92 members from the Wakefield, Waiiti, Foxhill and Tapawera area. It is still located on its original site at Wakefield Village on the

The building is going through an earthquake code process and a decommissioning service for the property will be held once a sale of the complex has been finalized. The decision for the Methodist-Presbyterian congregation to discontinue was driven by issues surrounding the necessary seismic strengthening of the church building, the small size of the existing congre-
gation and the formation of the combined Stoke-Waimea Methodist Parish. The new combined parish will share Minister Oh, who moved to New Zealand 17 years ago with his wife Sunmi and children, Esther and Harim. He spent 9 years in a Korean Methodist church in Auckland before moving to Alexandra to take up a position in his first English-speaking parish and was there for eight years.

Mixed reviews for Monster Slide The 300 metre Monster Slide has had mixed reviews from sliders in Nelson. The event, held in upper Collingwood St on Monday, began with a slow start due to the rain and some failing generators causing a delay of around an hour. Most people spoken to by the Waimea Weekly say they were waiting 45 minutes to an hour in line but most were understanding due to the large turnout. But one rider, Brendan Naughton, was not impressed with the event. “It’s not a steep enough slope. Trevor Timpson has spent the better part of 40 years whacking golf balls for fun, this summer one got some revenge. Trevor, a committee member of the Golden Downs Golf Club, was playing in the club’s annual New Year tournament alongside three other players, including his brother Kevin. As the foursome were waiting at the ninth tee, Trevor heard a cry of “four” coming from the first tee – the cry is code for “the ball is coming your way, watch out”. He turned to see a man pointing in his direction so Trevor, not seeing the ball, simply dipped his head as he had countless times before. Then, whack. The 55 year old was hit on the top of his head by the ball. He dropped to his knees, concussed. He says the next thing he remembers is waking up with his eyes and breath flickering, and finally, when he reTrevor alised what had happened, he Timpson. looked up to see his brother looking down on him with his hands on his hips and shaking his head. The dazed Trevor then heard his brother say “I can’t believe it knocked you out, I thought you were tougher than that”. The man who hit the ball came rushing over to offer his sincere apologies which Trevor quickly accepted, but it did take some time to stop the bleeding from the cut the ball made. “They were pouring water over my head,” says Trevor. “So the blood went all over my t-shirt. It looked worse than it was but it was quite funny when I got up to say a speech at the end of the tournament. I said ‘welcome to our friendly club’ while still wearing my blood-soaked shirt. It got a couple of laughs.” Trevor said he went to the hospital only after the tournament and was given the all clear. He was back playing golf at his beloved Golden Downs course the following week.

The Richmond Bridge Club is encouraging people to learn the game by providing comprehensive bridge lessons to any new members interested in the game. Club member Shirley Lattimore says lessons are one of the best ways to learn how to play the game. “Lessons are really great, we’re planning on having them over twelve weeks. What we do is stop and catch up a wee bit if people get a bit confused.” She says the club encourages people of all ages to get involved and it is great for keeping your mind active. “There is a stigma that bridge is for old people but it’s really not. It’s the young people who tend to play really well.” The Richmond club is strong with close to 220 members but would like more people to be intro-
duced to the game. Bridge grand master Steve Gray says since teaching bridge it has dawned on him just how much he didn’t know when he started. “I reckon I’ve played in a haze for the first 25 years, it was only in the last 15 years that I’ve really learnt the game. The minute you’ve got to teach it you realise how much you don’t know.” The club has kept up to date with technology, using tabletop bridge pads to transmit the game information through a modem, generating card printouts. Cards are also shuffled and sorted by machine. Many members play bridge online using computers or tablets and compete with players all around the globe. Twelve lessons cost $50 and include a year’s membership with a badge.

Mountainbiking Track, Wednesday, January, 21: Over 70 people attended a public meeting to discuss plans for a new mountain bike park in Wai-iti’s Tunnicliffe Forest. There was some concern from other users over the disruption a bike park may cause, so a second meeting will be held with representatives from each user group in order to discuss the park in greater detail. The date for the meeting is yet to be decided. Outdoor Theatre, Wednesday, January, 29: The Body and Space Theatre Company have enjoyed some successful performances at Fairfield House. The group performed an adaption of Around the World in 80 days which got a great response from the audience. Around 1400 people attended the shows which were held in Nelson between January 23 and 30. The theatre company also held two shows in Richmond’s Washbourn Gardens on January 31 and February 1.

Bikes and art mix for Bikefest
Cycling and art are not usually two things that go together but one Brightwater artist is changing that by creating sculptures of a funky biking family for the Sprig & Fern Bicycle Art Competition. The competition is part of the Konica Minolta Bikefest Nelson which started at the weekend and it has already attracted some weird and wonderful entries. One of those has been created by sculptor Gwen Nicholson who has entered fabric sculptures of a mum, dad and daughter out biking. Gwen has made the bike riders out of wire frames covered in old clothing items which have been set using a fabric hardening product called Paverpol. The cyclists are riding old bikes Gwen “scrounged up” from neighbours and the recycle centre where she also found the old clothing items. “I was initially only going to make a lady rider but I thought she needed company so I started making the father and daughter. There might even be a fourth family member out riding if I get time - who knows.” Competition organiser, Kaye Hill of Cyclelogical, says she has already received 21 entries and expects more before the entries close on February 10. The variety of the entries is “awesome” and includes a chair made of bike parts, a bird, paintings, sculptures and jewellery and a ball made out of 175 bike inner tubes. All the creations need to contain bicycle components, either physically or as an image, and will be on display and judged at the Carnivelo at Trafalgar Park on February 13. The winner will receive $1000 from Sprig & Fern.

Snapper competition to lure local fishermen The country’s largest teams’ fishing competition is back and organiser Troy Dando says it will be much bigger and better than previous years. Troy started the Tasman Bay Snapper Classic two years ago, but didn’t advertise it as he wanted to make sure the format was right before it went too big, too quick. After two years of refining, he’s certain he’s got it right. “It went surprisingly well, really, for the first two years while we were making sure the concept worked. Now we know it does we’re inviting more people and hoping to make a great day of it.” The competition is open to all businesses

Winery Tour puts on second show Simon Bloomberg
Organisers of the Winery Tour show at Neudorf Vineyards in Upper Moutere have scheduled a second concert on Thursday February 26 after Neudorf ’s February 27 concert sold out. The ninth annual Winery Tour is co-head-
lined by Don McGlashan and Dave Dobbyn who will performing together. They are joined by Anika Moa and VNZMA Legacy award winner and Hall of Fame inductee Supergroove. Co-promoter of the tour, Campbell Smith says he is not surprised by the sell-out. “South Island fans are amazing in their

Schools are back… School is back and that means there will be more children out and about, especially in the mornings and afternoon. The basic message around schools is: slow down and look out for kids. In many places around Nelson electronic variable school speed limit signs will be turned back on. Reducing your speed to 40km/h provides for a much increased reaction time for a driver, meaning you can identify potential hazards and react much more quickly.
Pedestrian crossings are places where pedestrians should be able to cross the road in safety. Drivers need to slow down as they approach them and be prepared to stop. Students and families need to remember to use the correct place to safely cross the road outside the school. So be extra careful around schools and watch out for kids!
20 km/h past a stationary school bus Remember – the speed limit for passing a stationary school bus when children are getting on and off is 20 km per hour. This speed limit applies no matter which direction you are travelling in.
Drivers – school bus incidents can happen
on both high and low speed roads. However, the faster your vehicle is travelling, the more likely it is that a child will be killed if they are hit.
Parents – when dropping off or collecting
your child from the school bus, try to do it so that you are on the same side as the bus. This will cut out the need for your child to cross the road. Park your car well away from the bus stop or other children so you don’t block drivers, children’s or the bus driver’s visibility. Get out of your car and meet your child or walk with them to the designated bus stop.
Students – wait at the nominated bus stop
area and stand well back from the road edge. Bus stops have usually been chosen as a safer place to stop. After you have got off the bus wait as far away from the road edge as possible, until the bus has moved away. If you need to cross the road, wait until the bus has driven off and you can see clearly up and down the road.

Just a thought... Isn’t it amazing what a couple of bleeding noses will do to your resolve? Last year I was asked to take part in the Fight 4 Victory charity boxing event to help raise some money for the Victory Boxing Charitable Trust. Having been to the gym several times and witnessed what a great job they do for the kids who attend, I enthusiastically agreed. I’d be lying if I told you there weren’t a couple of selfish reasons as well. The added incentive of getting fit and throwing myself outside my comfort zone were certainly positives that I know will come from the experience – but charity was key. It was September last year when I agreed to take part in the Fight 4 Victory. Three weeks of official training down and I’m wondering what the hell I’ve got myself into. I don’t want to give too much away to my opponent [a man I’m trying to morph into a villain in my own head], but training has been brutal. Fat lips, plenty of sweat and plenty of pain. Tears? Not quite, but too close for comfort. Under the expert tutelage of Barry Galbraith, Paul Hampton, Deon Charles and Andy Sanson, nine other "boxers" have joined me in the blue corner. We meet three times a week, run, skip, hit bags, hit each other and then cry in agony as we’re made to do horrific ab workouts. On top of all that are the mental games. In just two months, we’ll all hop in the ring in front of several thousand people and attempt to compete in a sport that was completely foreign to us just a few months before. If that isn’t enough to contend with, some bugger standing in the same ring will be trying to punch us on the nose. Trust me, that messes with your head after a brutal training session. They say the journey is part of the beauty of competing in these types of events. So over the next nine weeks I’ll let you know how the good people in the blue corner are finding the training and what we’ll be doing to help raise some extra cash for the cause. So keep an eye out and if you see any of us on the street with a fat lip, try not to laugh, we’re in enough pain as it is. Fight 4 Victory is being held at Saxton Stadium on April 4. General admission tickets will go on sale from February 20 at the usual Ticket Direct outlets, including the Theatre Royal, Nelson i-Site and Richmond Mall. Tickets will cost $35 each.

But we must never lose the ability to dream. Carl Sandburg said, “nothing happens unless first a dream.” Often all we see are the difficulties. However, we need to change our focus to see the dream. George Bernard Shaw said, ”Some men see things as they are and say, ‘Why?’ I dream things that never were and say, ‘Why not?’” We must first look at things as they are, and then we dream of how they could be. Antoine de Saint Exupery said “If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work, and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea.”
History describes people who changed their world because they yearned for the vast and endless sea. Martin Luther King was such a man who dreamed of racial equality. However, Martin Luther King’s first dream was to have a quiet life of study, enjoy his lovely wife Coretta and their daughter. But one night as he was considering the death threats, his previous night in jail and how to resign from leadership, he had an encounter with God. He heard an inner voice saying, “Martin Luther, stand up for righteousness, stand up for truth… and lo, I will be with you even until the end of the world.” This encounter led him to pursue a different kind of dream. That’s the power of a dream that is beyond ourselves. But secondly, we need to commit to our dream. John Maxwell said, “Until

I am committed, there is a hesitancy, a chance to draw back. But the moment I definitely commit myself, then God moves also, and a whole stream of events erupts. All manner of unforeseen incidents, meetings, persons, and material assistance, which I could never have dreamed would come my way, begin to flow toward me - the moment I make a commitment.” Thirdly, we must take action. Italian proverb: “Between saying and doing, many a pair of shoes is worn out” Many people make new year’s resolutions. A study shows that only 8 per cent of people keep these resolutions. For dreams to be fulfilled we need to take one step at a time, for “great oaks grow from little acorns.” In the pursuit of your dreams, I encourage you to pursue a personal relationship with God, through Jesus Christ, who is the ultimate source of our dreams. Nelson’s Meg Bichard and Kurt Lancaster confirmed their status as the region’s best all-round mountainbikers, winning the Giant Top Gun after three days of racing on some of the Maitai Valley’s toughest trails. Riders in Top Gun has to compete in two of the three different race formats with the downhill on Saturday, cross-country on Sunday and enduro on Monday. Meg and Kurt competed in the downhill and enduro on their way to winning Top Gun which was made even more demanding by the wet conditions. Meg started the weekend finishing second in the downhill on Broken Axe track before winning Monday’s enduro raced in three stages over Peaking Ridge, 629 and Maitai Face tracks. She completed the three stages in 23 minutes 23 seconds to jump ahead of downhill winner Raewyn Morrison and stay head of Jo Perrott. “We had a nice dry day on the downhill but the enduro was the complete opposite,” Meg says. “The tracks were so steep and slippery I lost count of the number of crashes I had. “I was following Raewyn on the Maitai Face and she crashed so I passed her and then I crashed and she passed me. Young trainer to set up own stable The Harness Racing Cadet of the Year, Dylan Stratford, is returning to Canterbury where he plans to set up his own stable after gaining invaluable experience working with some of the top horsemen in the US. Dylan has been working with race horses since he was 13 when he started helping out Richmond trainer Murray Pash in the mornings before heading off to school at Waimea College. Dylan, 23, also used to help out his grandfather Roger Williams and mother Jan Williams who “always had one or two horses in training” at Richmond Park. When he left school, Dylan moved to Canterbury to work as a stablehand for Tim Butt. Last month, he was back at Richmond Park for a few weeks “to help out mum” before returning to Canterbury where he aims to start putting together a team of horses for his own racing stables. “My family weren’t that keen for me to get into the horse game but I knew that I wanted to be a horse trainer after working with Murray Pash,” Dylan says. “I’d go down to the track before school and in the holidays - I really enjoyed it and I learned so much from him.” After leaving school at 15, Dylan gained valuable experience working for Tim and David Butt, Nigel McGrath and Mark

He won New Zealand Harness Racing Cadet of the Year Award last August and used the $2000 prize money to spend three months working in the US with top New Jersey trainers Chris Ryder and Brett Bittle. “It was a real eye-opener going to the US. The horse racing is so different over there because there’s big money for two-yearolds and they are always trying to get the horses going as quick as they can as soon as they can. “The size of some of the bigger stables is incredible too. The leading trainers like Ron Burke have 250 horses in work. “I also got a chance to go to the Harrisburg Yearling Sales
which had over 1000 horses. The number of horses and the money was incredible - the top lot went for something like $750,000.” Dylan, who already has one training win to his name after Deidre’s Flash won at Forbury in August 2012 and one driving success in Australia, says the three months he spent in New Jersey has given him the confidence to go out on his own. “I’ll go back down to Canterbury now and work in an established stable.” Dylan already has a promising three-year-old Love You colt named The Grande Armee and will be looking for more horses to train when he sets up his new stables.

Tuna time is here! Some good reports of tuna getting caught on both sides of the bay and as low down as Delaware Bay. Troll any type of lure at lower speeds of 4.5-6.0 knots to try and nab an Albacore tuna. Snapper are still taking rod and reel fishing on changes of light and small bite times. Set-lines have slowed a bit while spawning is on but some good catches up to 30 lb have been rumoured. Kenerpuru Sound is still fishing well for snapper and kingfish alike. Scallops are hard to get in numbers but still worth the effort and a favourite seafood of many. Numerous reports of schools of “Rat” kingis and bigger models have been seen in all corners of the bay. They are prolific after 3 or 4 great breeding years in a row which is great for our local fishery stocks. Just remember the legal take able size for a kingfish is 75cm and over, that is a reasonable size fish so please handle carefully into the boat to unhook and measure e.g.; do not gaff the fish if you are unsure of the length, you can net or grab the tail and quickly lift in. As we were winding in our lures at the end of our day we had some braid hooked to one of the lures. We knew it wasn’t ours as it was the

After a heap of hand lining we retrieved 300 metres of braid, 4 metres of leader and a small rat kingi with a ‘walk the dog’ lure half way down his throat. This was a sign of either not having set the rod’s drag correctly for “strike” and or not having the ‘clicker’ on to gain the angler’s attention. Either way, the small kingi would have suffered a sure death dragging around all that jewellery had we not unhooked and released it. Don’t be scared to ask the advice of the fishing shop staff or come along to our Dawnbreakers Fishing Club to get some tips on the correct methods for targeting kingfish. Most by now would have the 7th March booked in for the Tasman Bay Snapper Classic, but also there is the endorsed Charity Auction at 6pm at the Speights Alehouse. This auction will have some awesome bargains on all sorts of donated new items, along with fresh fish caught on the day. The proceeds going to the great cause of Big Brothers Big Sisters Nelson. Feedback sought – Rural land use and subdivision policy review In recent months, the Council has been preparing changes to rural land use and subdivision provisions in its Tasman Resource Management Plan. Feedback on a Draft Plan Change is now being sought from residents. The proposed changes could provide opportunities for rural housing and subdivision with specific opportunities for rural commercial activities, cooperative living and rural-residential development. The new ideas have been developed from an earlier period of consultation on issues and options and Council workshops on the feedback received. The Council is now seeking public input into the Draft Plan Change until the end of March 2015. Public evening meetings have been organised to enable community discussion on the proposed changes: • 17 February 2015, 5.00 pm – 9.00 pm, Wakefield – Wakefield Fire Station • 19 February 2015, 5.00 pm – 9.00 pm, Takaka – Takaka Bowling Club • 24 February 2015, 5.00 pm – 9.00 pm, Motueka – Motueka Hall supper room. These sessions are open to the public, with staff and Councillors attending to discuss the proposed changes. A presentation with a question and answer session will run each evening from 6.30 pm. Tasman District Council’s Creative Communities Scheme has money to help groups and individuals running arts projects in the Tasman District. Creative Communities provides funding to support community involvement in the arts, whether that’s music, theatre, festivals, mural painting, outdoor sculptures, art in public spaces, kapa haka, singing, art workshops or something else. Funded by Creative New Zealand, the Council’s Creative Communities Scheme is designed to support opportunities for communities, urban or rural, to have a go at art whether it’s for hobby or to develop a career, said fund co-ordinator Mike Tasman Jones. “We’re looking for art projects with broad community involvement, involve young people or projects that support the diverse arts and cultural traditions of local communities.” The Tasman Creative Communities Scheme funding in 2014 enabled theatre groups like “Body and Space” to workshop “The Map” with local Golden Bay performers aged 13 to adults before the community performance. The Embroiders Guild were able to host a weekend of workshops for beginners to “old hands”, budding authors were able to attend a “Breaking into Print” workshop, 50 members of the Mapua community were able to roll up their sleeves, mix up the grout and mosaic one wall of the public toilets and 500 Richmond residents watched a large cast of locals at the outdoor summer theatre in Washbourn Gardens. The Creative Communities Scheme funding, alongside a huge amount of energy and enthusiasm from the applicants, is what enabled these opportunities and many others to take place. If you have a great community arts project needing some dollars to make it happen the Tasman Creative Communities Scheme maybe just what you’re looking for. There are three rounds of applications per year. The next round closes on 10 March 2015, for projects starting after 1 April, the next rounds later in 2015 close 10 July and 10 November. There is $39,007.80 allocated per annum with allocations averaging $1,000.
